Happy Mothers Day

Before I was a Mom -
I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday.

Before I was a Mom -
I cleaned my house each day. I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom -
I had never been puked on – Pooped on – Spit on – Chewed on, or Peed on. I had complete control of my mind and My thoughts. I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom -
I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests…or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom -
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life
so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom -
I didn’t know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn’t know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn’t know that bond between a mother and her child. I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important.

Before I was a Mom -
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay. I had never known The warmth, The joy, The love, The heartache, The wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom.

Happy Mothers Day to all of the Beautiful, Wonderful Mothers I have had the pleasure of getting to know. I hope your day is filled with laughter and love, and you know just how much you are appreciated.

Last year when I decided to offer the Little Loves plan, I had no idea how it would go. Would parents call every 3 months to book sessions? Would it really work? There are a lot of reasons to worry when offering a new service, but with this business you just never know how it will be received. In my wildest dreams I would never have guessed that it would have become as popular as it has, nor would I have guessed that I would have such a wonderful opportunity to be a part of these little babies lives. It’s amazing to watch all your babies grow, and today is an extra special day, as Mr. N., our first Little Loves client turns one.

He came 3 weeks early and spent a little time in the Nic-U before we got to meet, but it’s hard to imagine him now as the preemie he was the day we first met. Please join me in looking back a little at Mr. N’s first year. Happy Birthday sweet boy, and thank you for the smiles you give me every time you see me!

I have NEVER entered an I heart faces challenge before, so please be patient while I have some fun. This week’s challenge is Happiness, and this image to me embodies that word. A couple weeks ago my husband and I drove half way across the country to do a newborn session. One of my very dear friends became an Aunt again, and it had been awhile since I’d gotten to see her. After we wrapped up with our newborn images, this handsome little man had an impromptu session as well. He was so sweet, and I love his laugh in this one!

NEW for this year. LIVE Chicks AND Bunnies.

You guys, I am SO excited for these sessions!!

They are going to be 30 minute sessions, starting at 10am on Saturday and Sunday. We have an outdoor location ready to use, close to downtown. In case of rain, or in-climate weather there is a separate indoor location as well. We’ll have bunnies and chicks, balloons and Easter Eggs to chose from. Feel free to bring a basket or use one we provide. Everything will be set up and ready to go, you just have to bring your beautiful babies to come play. We can’t wait to see all the colors of Spring!

Sessions are $150, but we’re doing these a little different this time. All sessions come with a $50 print credit and your galleries will be up within a week.

Love Day-3rd grade style

What do you get when you have a 3rd grader that’s already done all of this year’s popular valentines options already? You get weeks and weeks of searching and hem hawing and just plain uncertainty. You get an EIGHT year old that wants to do her OWN thing, but still wants to “look around”. God Bless Pinterest. We sat and searched a couple different nights, making notes about some things we saw that she liked. Then we put it all together to make it hers. This one’s got a mind of her own, and she’s not afraid to let me know.

This year telling boys she “loves them” or anything else that is “mushy stuff” is OUT OF THE QUESTION, so take a look to see what she came up with. I was pretty impressed.

Oh how they Grow!

Last year we unveiled our new baby plan, called the Little Loves plan. It has been such an honor getting to know these beautiful babies that allow me in every few months to document their milestones! I know I probably sound like a broken record, but I LOVE my job. How can anyone have a bad day when I’m surrounded by these sweet little ones.

My Funny Valentine

Earlier this month, I decided to get a jump on Valentines Day (or Love Day as its known in our house) with a super cute idea for my little guy that I had seen floating around the web. I love these fun little mustaches and had planned on using them for a photo booth for my oldest daughter’s birthday party last fall, but never found any I loved. So I put the idea on the backburner, and tabled it for a few months.

My little guy is 3 and fancies himself a bit of a comedian so when I brought up the subject and showed them to him, he was all about it. I started searching out the perfect mustaches and low and behold my search landed me at one of my FAVORITE blogs. Easy Makes me Happy is the blog of a dear web friend, Tara, who designs the BEST patterns for all things crocheted. But we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to talk about these great mustaches. SO if you’d like to see Tara’s tutorial and get the free mustache download, just click HERE and it will take you right over to her page.

just a note… I did a couple things differently for my photo shoot. A. I didn’t use stiff felt, I only had regular black in the house and wasn’t up to a trip out to the store when we only had a short time in which to get this done. B. nor did I use sticks, but if you’re looking for a stick option for your mustache’s, then I suggest skewer sticks. Relatively cheap and inexpensive for your craft.

So we cut out a few of the mustache’s and used a little glue dot (shhhh, photographer’s secret to get it to stick on. Here’s the one we started with:

He loves his hat and suspenders and tries to use them every time we take pictures, so who am I to say no. After all, this was all about HIM. So from there he humored me and we got to this shot:

which, oh my goodness…KILLS ME! It was ALMOST what I had visioned…but since it was nice out, we decided to try another mustache and go play on the porch.

Photographers Note: this was not some big elaborate set up in a studio, this was honestly him sitting on a barstool in his bedroom. His wall provided the perfect backdrop, and we used his bedroom window as a light and my flash to to fill the light. You don’t need to hang sheets, or try to make it look like a photography studio for your images, just find a good neutral wall and use it.

We have a lovely screened in brick porch and took full advantage of it. I let him pick out another mustache, and we started playing again.

I was singing some of the tunes to Mario Brothers to him as we shot these, and obviously he thinks his momma is silly. But c’mon. THAT mustache is totally Luigi.

this one was ALMOST perfect, but I wanted a more serious shot for his valentine.

and there we have it. PERFECT. Remember this is all about FUN, so make sure not to make it too stressful and just go with it.

So Ready to see the COMPLETE valentine?

We are making them into fabulous bookmarks, for him to give to all his girls in his life. All I know is Momma better get the first one! I hope you enjoyed a little behind the scenes peek at my handsome man, and our fun photo shoot!

Love Day Garland Tutorial

So it’s no secret that we LOVE to craft at our house.

We’re constantly looking up fun new things to make to decorate with, and if it can be used during a session, then it gets super bonus points. For this session, we crafted the tie onsie, hat AND the garland in the back. This tutorial is all about the cute garland.

It is a great kid-friendly craft that doesn’t take that long at all (and it’s not expensive, horray)

We had the felt on hand, but only used 4 pieces of felt to make two 4 foot (roughly) lengths of garland.

So Here’s what you need:

4 pieces of regular sized felt

Yarn (or string, jute, ribbon) whatever strikes your fancy

Marker, Scissors, pins, and a hot glue gun. I also had a little heart shape that I used as a template, but size yours as you want.

I tried regular glue, but it would have taken way too long to set up. If you try it, let me know.

Okay, so yes my little heart is a previous love day craft-from two years ago…we’re recycling their use for this craft. I liked their size.

So here’s how easy this craft is. I folded the felt in half.

I traced the heart to maximize the felt usage, so keeping the hearts as close together as I could.

I filled the whole sheet as best I could and got a few more hearts out of some of the other colors.

I pinned some of the hearts and then cut them out in sections to keep everything together and orderly.

I did this with all 4 colors. Just a note: If you’re going to use sparkle felt, make sure you fold the sparkle side together, keeping the sparkles in the middle.

I tied a slip knot in the top of the yarn, then put both ends of the string in the middle of the first heart to anchor it. I then just hot glued the hearts in a pattern down the yarn.

At the bottom I tied another knot before gluing on my last heart and also glued those strings inside the heart so that there was a loop on both ends.

We used them to decorate our little trees next to the fireplace in lieu of all our pretty Christmas decorations that just came down.

So that’s it. See how easy!
